The Victorian Boombox (tm) is for sale!!

Dear ladies and gentlemen:

I am now selling my cherished Victorian Boombox as a commission of sorts.  It's being marketed as the "iCog Victorian Boombox (TM)." I have placed it on my shop for an interested patron who would like to help me finish the Boombox a little further.

Plainly visible, and the stars of the system are the two metal Victrola-like horns, which actually house two full-range speakers. The main body of the boombox is actually a subwoofer, wrapped in chocolate coloured felt, with a nice stamped Victorian pattern. Three "rusted" metal conduits (painted steel) conduct the electric aural waves to the horns The "binaural" horns are bolted securely to the subwoofer, and you can carry the whole contraption thanks to its ultra sturdy wrought-iron handle. An elegant copper plated bezel lines an opening in a box meant to serve as base for a portable audio device. It was specifically sized for for an iPod Touch 2/3/4 generation and / or an iPhone (R) 4 (I haven't tested with an iPhone (R) 3/3GS or first generation since those are thicker an MAY NOT FIT!! But this being a commission some compromise may be worked out, please inquire).

As shown, the boombox has a stereo 1/8" connector suitable for connection to any device with a headphone/earphone connection which is smaller and or similar in size to the iPod Touch/iPhone4, such as a portable mp3 player, and the plan is to add an apple USB connector to allow the iPhone (R) iPod/iPhone (R) to be charged as well, but that will require some work from my part, including electrical work, which is naturally part of the commission...

Be warned that this is a unique "one-off" construct. I may not be able to make another item like this in some time, since the parts are no longer available. The three main components (subwoofer and Victrola-like horns) are discontinued items from yesteryear, and I may simply never be able to get my hand on those items again.

Getting another subwoofer system may not be hard but the shape of a more modern subwoofer will be different and a newer model is not likely to have a box made of particle board (essential to using Steampunkable hardware the box as the main body of the Victorian Boombox). I do not plan to give up trying to make another boombox, but chances are I will have to re-design the whole system and build parts from scratch to make the next generation Victorian Boombox™. With the holiday season closing in I will not be likely to make another one before next year, assuming I miraculously found the parts again.

NEWS: Wood lids for iCog and eCog cases!

Ladies and gentlemen:

I just added one more item to the lineup of iCog (TM) and eCog (TM):  an accessory wooden lid of all the tablet cases.  This is a very simple addition for the cases that I intend to offer separately at my shop


I noticed that something was missing from my tablet cases:  there was no way to protect the screen.  In the same way some tablets come with their own detachable cover, I came up with the idea to include sockets in all of my tablet cases such that you can purchase a hinged wooden lid for you case, and attach it without the need for screwdrivers and such.  A brass wire hook screwed in the opposite side of the case allows you to use a padlock to lock the wood case shut!

For now, I will only offer this as an upgrade package to be sold at the time of purchase, but in the very near future, I may actually sell it separately for $50 (projected price), provided I substitute the brass wire hook with a less protrusive device, a snap button perhaps, like those used to attach canvas.

The wooden lid has an interior frame and panel (facing the screen), lined with felt to match the interior of the iCog (TM) and eCog (TM) case.  The exterior of the lid has another wood frame and features two beautiful polished brass hinges, which attach to the tablet by way of two knurled knobs.  These can be turned either with a conventional screwdriver, or with your thumbs.  I think this is a very nice way to dress up and complete the package.

As an extra for my cases in the near future, I intend to replace the brass nuts in the mechanized buttons, and replace them with brass acorn nuts;  I may add this as a standard "upgrade package" in the future, but for now you can see the pictures of my latest commission on the eCog Aphrodite (TM) case for the barnes and Noble Nook (R) Color.

Re: The iCog Dionaea (tm) case for iPad 2 is unveiled!!!

iCogs and eCogs: smartphone and tablet cases for the iPhone (R) 4 !

Dear ladies and gentlemen:

Just writing to let you know of the progress on my iCog Dione(TM) Steampunk cases for the iPhone (R)  A complete success!  All available through my storefront:

Right now, I'm expanding into iPad (R) territory under the name of iCog Dionaea (TM) (soon to be released), and I've already released another branch of non-Apple oriented cases which I call "eCog (TM)" 

The first in the lineup of eCog devices is the eCog Aphrodite (TM), which is a case for the Barnes and Noble Nook (TM) Color.  This market is a little slower because less people own a Nook, but having looked at one up-close, I think its a great reader at a great price (easily hackable into a tablet by way of "rooting" to restore the full Android OS, also has bluetooth capability if you hack into it).

Also upon request by a patron, I have built a case for the HTC EVO 4G (TM) smartphone, and named it "eCog Aeneas (TM)" after the Greek god of the same name who is supposed to be Aphrodite's brother, and both children of Dione.  I will perform an experiment and also post it on Etsy to see what the market is for the HTC EVO in light of the fact that it's being replaced by the EVO 3D.

And last but not leastm the iCog Tactile (shown below with my iPod inside), is the one I made for the iPod Touch, versions 2 and 3, and with very minor modifications (one millimeter of extra carving inside the case) it will also fit the iPod Touch 4 (the Touch 4 is slightly thinner, narrower and taller by about 1-2 mm, but otherwise nearly identical to the generation 2-3).
